Abstract

The ultimate objective of any organisation’s Information Technology (IT) infrastructure is to provide uninterrupted service to customers. However, in the event of a disaster, a cause for organisations failing to meet this objective is the absence of knowledge that can guide response initiatives, namely, key lessons learned from prior disasters. A preliminary interview with a Disaster Recovery (DR) team leader and a focus group discussion with DR team members concluded that the DR teams in client organisations face two challenges: (i) absence of a centralised lessons-learned repository and (ii) inability to safeguard valuable information during DR activities. The interview and focus group discussion concluded that the lessons-learned process is not prominent in client organisations. In addition, limited attention is given for the knowledge that can prevent future repetitive error and safeguard time and cost. Thus, this research studies the factors for creating a centralised lessons-learned repository and simplifying the process to capture valuable information during DR activities in client organisation. This research aims to solve the abovementioned two problems in client organisation and contribute to scientific knowledge by (i) providing valuable information in a centralised lessons-learned repository, in which client organisations can learn from past experience and improve future responses, and (ii) supporting client organisations to safeguard valuable information during DR activities.
