Abstract

ArtXpression Festival (AxF) 2017, organised by Counselling and Career Development Unit, Student Affairs Division gave loads of meaningful experiences to its audience, which was especially related to the community as it facilitated reminiscing and healing through enrichment of sensory stimulation, using multiple approach and medium of arts. It also reflected multiple forms of arts as positive journey of self-expression. Held in MMU Cyberjaya Campus from 10 to 14 April recently, AxF 2017 attracted quite a tremendous turnout where its series of events such as Open Mic Night, Art Therapy Workhop, Wall of Expression and the Exhibition gained more than expected supports from the University community. The highest number came to Dewan Tun Canselor for the Theatre Night, also AxF2017 Closing Ceremony in which the stage play, ‘Sebelum Ku Terjaga’ became the best highlight of the event as it awed more than 1,000 audience including Prof. Datuk Dr. Ahmad Rafi Mohamed Eshaq, President of MMU. ‘Sebelum Ku Terjaga’ was directed and written by Ausz Din, the award winner of Best Director for the University of Malaya Theatre Carnival 2013 and Best Director for the Kuala Lumpur Theatre Carnival 2013. The superb performance of the cast really brought a huge impact on the success of this theatre. Its director said, “This psycho-thriller theatre highlights the theme of mental health, Amnesia. In conjunction with ArtXpression Festival 2017, the issue of mental health became a subject inspired from the psychological trauma brought by the main character as exposure to the public into their world.” The theatre conveyed the awareness of mental health, which has become a part of the community but often been underestimated. More publics need to be educated and exposed to the issue of mental health to open their eyes so they can give more support and appropriate guidance to those in need. As the AxF 2017 suggested and ‘Sebelum Ku Terjaga’ implied, “I hope I am able to love you as how your memory is towards me. Love me with all your heart while I am still here for you today, before I get drowned in dreams. Before I wake up.”
