Abstract

This research studies a virtual education environment for engineering courses. The virtual education environment consists of networked functional blocks where each functional block is a combination of hardware and software that provides a specific function. Specific service environments such as a virtual learning environment and virtual teaching environment can be derived by integrating different sets of functional blocks. The research involves the development of all the different functional blocks to demonstrate the viability of Virtual Education Environment, with specific focus on the knowledge base and interface for the learning environment. The development of the knowledge base, the multimedia database, and user interface would provide hands-on experience in integrating new technologies. A multimedia knowledge base is being developed for the virtual education environment. The knowledge base is designed using the object-oriented approach, to represent concepts taught by lecturers. This representation would be used to deliver lessons in the virtual learning environment. Each concept consists of characterristics, and each characteristic can be presented to students using different media. The knowledge base consists of reusable objects can be used to represent each piece of knowledge. Combinations of objects will lead to contents of the lecturers within the courses. With this environment, multimedia education components should not be part of one and only one lecture anymore, but can be part of many lecturers. An Object Oriented approach would permit dynamic access to education material where the presentation of the material will be continuously adapted to match user expectation and competence. A prototype of the knowledge base was developed to illustrate this representation. The main objective is to facilitate the development of the knowledge base, and to explore the usage of the knowledge base by lecturers and students. The prototype was completed with the development of simple implementation for the media base, lecture base, and the user interfaces.
