Abstract

As XML has become well-known of its features and benefits, more applications and internet websites has increase their usage of XML. Nevertheless, it has not been fully utilized as the sole database due to the fact that relational databases are still widely use as the back-end repository for most organizations. Towards the recent years, hybrid XML databases have been introduced to enable the existence of XML technology in the traditional databases such as relational databases. In this paper, we conducted the performance evaluation on storing and retrieving XML data using (1) relational DTD approach, and (2) XML Column approach in IBM DB2. The experimental results indicate that the relational DTD approach performs better in most cases.
