Abstract

This thesis presents a methodology for improving throughput of multi-rate multi-channel WMNs by exploiting available orthogonal channels and data rates. As a launching point of this thesis, high-rate links are separated from low-rate links according to the proposed bandwidth threshold of each orthogonal channel so as to alleviate performance anomaly. The second part of this thesis studies the impact of performance anomaly and traffic pattern on the capacity of channel assignment in WMNs. An Effective Link Capacity function, which is a mathematical metric used to estimate the long-term useful link capacity of each orthogonal channel is formulated after taking into account the degree of performance anomaly. Based on the proposed functions, we propose a Capacity Based Data Rate-Aware Channel Assignment (CDRCA) algorithm to select the channel that suffers from the least degree of performance anomaly to improve the capacity of multi-rate multi-channel WMNs.
