Abstract

Cyberjaya, 18 June - Professor Ir Dr Hairul Azhar Abdul Rashid of the Faculty of Engineering delivered his Inaugural Lecture on his research area of optical fiber. He spoke about how two seemingly unrelated problems, famine and bandwidth shortages, could be solved by using a third, even unlikelier, candidate - optical fibers. In his speech titled "The World of Optical Fiber", Prof. Hairul deliberates how optical fiber could be used not just to allow us to enjoy faster Internet speeds, but he also deliberated on how optical fiber can be used for radiation dosimetry, particularly in irritated food-leading to improved food shelf life and reducing food shortages. The event was chaired by prominent professor of photonics, Professor Dr Harith Ahmad of UM, 2010 recipient of the prestigious Merdeka Award. An inaugural lecture is the highlight of an academic's career, as it honours the academic's appointment to full professorship and celebrates the professor's scholarship achievements. Such lectures are delivered in a manner intended for the general audience, and allow the professor to showcase his/her research career to the community. These lectures hosted at MMU reflect MMU's vibrant research profile through such high-calibre professors.
