Abstract

Strain-based and displacement-based finite element methods are two common approaches in finite element analysis. • Unlike displacement-based elements, strain-based elements are free from various locking phenomena and perform well with coarse meshes. • Strain-based elements should satisfy compatibility and equilibrium for optimal performance [1]. Many existing formulations fulfil these criteria but are obtained through trial and error. • Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to propose a new element formulation technique, as well as develop strain-based polygonal elements.
