Abstract

With depletion of fossil fuels, the shift towards renewable energy can be observed, namely with solar photovoltaic systems. However, the placement of the PV systems in the open systems makes them vulnurable to the treats of lightning strikes, eventually affecting the whole system and altering its performance. Thus, using PSCAD, a 400-kW grid connector solar PV system has been modelled to study on. The lightning current model was done based on the Double Exponential Function with standard and non-standard waveforms. The lightning current was then injected in the DC side of the PV system, with various amplitudes of lightning current for each specific waveforms. From the transient that was observed due to injection, it was made clear that it can travel to the grid through the inverters, transformers and put the system at risk. Thus, this paper can be useful to decide suitable ratings for lightning protective equipments to be installed.
