Abstract

Over the years, agriculture or farming has played a significant role in the mankind livelihood and survival It has been the primary source of income for many countries. Irrigation plays an essential role in farming to irrigate crops to maintain the healthy grow. Irrigation process of crops is labour intensive in farming sector. However, the farming industry workforce has been affected by COVID 19 outbreak. Travel bans due to COVID 19 considerably reduce the available workforce. To address this issue, we have proposed a smart irrigation system that leverages on Internet of Things (IoT) and smart sensor technologies to monitor and control the irrigation process without much human involvement. The smart irrigation system is able to irrigate the crops based on the detected soil moisture level, which reduces the reliance on workforce, as well as reduces the amount of water consumed in conventional irrigation process.
