Abstract

Cameron Highlands, one of the major food suppliers to Malaysians, is experiencing climate change. Research has proven that climate change has a definite effect toward the agriculture sector. Besides, agriculture acts as a very important role in the livelihood of the communities living in Malaysia as it contributes to Malaysia’s economic growth as well as food security (Department of Statistics, 2021). Hence, this study examine the determinants of farmer’s adaptation to climate change in Cameron Highland and wish to serve as a reference information toward designing suitable agriculture policies for Malaysia by the policy makers. A questionnaire was designed based on the literature review and translated into other local languages. Some minor amendments were done after pre-test. The questionnaire will be distributed to approximately 200 farmers in Cameron Highlands and analysed through descriptive analysis. The result showed that farmers with higher education level tend to adapt more adaptation strategies. This is probably because farmers are educated with the knowledge of climate change. Meanwhile, farming experience also statistically proven that farmers with higher experience will adapt to more strategies in order to decrease the negative impact from climate change. Furthermore, farmers that believe climate change is actually happening in Cameron Highlands are also one of the determinants that determine whether farmers adapt to climate change.
