Abstract

Facility Layout Problem (FLP) is a nondeterministic polynomial time NP-hard problem concerned with the assignment of departments in a plane region in order to optimize the measures of performance of a system. Many approximate algorithms have been proposed with an extensive applicability to deal with these problems, both with heuristics and metaheuristics. The existing algorithms focuses on the initial stage of FLPs and many studies on heuristic has faded away since quite a number of research has moving toward Meta-heuristics. However, it is still worth to explore heuristics method alone more depth. The need for a new or improved and efficient approach is required for effective machines arrangement, particularly, for Unequal Area Facility Layout Problems (UA-FLPs). An effective arrangement of machines in a manufacturing plant is a crucial issue. This is in ensuring the company’s success while maintain competitiveness for it contributes beneficially to the overall performance of the manufacturing system by decreasing (minimizing) material handling costs (MHC) and lead times as well as increasing productivity. Purpose – This research proposes a hybrid heuristic approach by combining two algorithms, namely, “The Origin” and population based meta-heuristic algorithms on Genetic Algorithm. The proposed approach is used to solve the Unequal Area Facility Layout Problem (UA-FLP) with the objective of minimizing the sum of material handling cost and Manhattan (rectilinear) distance between the departments while satisfying the constraints of functional area size and reserve space.
