Abstract

In Malaysia, the comic publication is amongst the significant industry that generates profits to the country, but in recent years, sales of printed comic have been shrinking due to globalization and technological development. In the physical form, comics are free from the limitations of internet connections, wired communications or broadcasting infrastructures. However, as technology advances and global networks are easily accessible, printed comic (PC) has lost a significant number of readers over the years. Comic enthusiasts often debate the differences between printed comics (PC) and digital interactive comics (DIC). The new generation of readers prefers to read comics online or through their mobile devices. This phenomenon has led the industry to evolve and transform into new forms to keep abreast with the latest technology. The objective of this study is to discover the factors that influencing reading preferences amongst comic readers. The methodology used includes collecting data from the comic readers, the consumers, and the enthusiasts through the preliminary survey using Google online questionnaires, gathering opinions on the related topic of selected online comic forum discussions and a series of interviews. Codes were used to summarize, synthesize and classify many observations made out of qualitative data. In conclusion, the transformation of comic medium in the digital platform has affected the choice of comic readers.
