Abstract

Background - Malaysia segregates income groups into three categories and those belong to the lowincome earners’ group, known as B40 and M40 are stressed over their financial state and feel unhappy. Past studies recognize mindfulness practices as a tool to make someone be in the present moment, leading people to have an accepting mind and consequently have better well-being. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to explore the role of mindfulness practices in increasing wellbeing, especially towards life satisfaction and psychological well-being of Malaysian B40 and M40 income earners. Design/methodology/approach - A 4 weeks mindfulness program was designed for guiding the respondents on mindfulness practices and the online questionnaires were distributed before and after the mindfulness program. Findings/Expected Contributions - This study found that the level of respondents’ life satisfaction and psychological well-being increased after 4 weeks of the mindfulness program. An increase in mean and significant results are depicted with the analysis of the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Research limitations - The weeks of the mindfulness program could be longer and extended in the future. Originality/value - There is a lack of past studies that apply mindfulness practices in reducing the financial stress among Malaysian lower-income households. It is new to properly look into the role of mindfulness in increasing the well-being of Malaysian B40 and M40 income earners.
