Abstract

Background - The graduates are more excited about getting a steady income and becoming independent. Nevertheless, governments have realized that entrepreneurship and SMEs are the keys to meeting the goals for a vital and growing economy. This also includes the emphasis on the importance of social entrepreneurship and its potential to meet economic goals and social ones. Social entrepreneurship research is relatively new in Malaysia, but it is one of the economic growth. Up to date, there is limited research in Malaysia studying the factor effecting the Malaysian tertiary education students to be a social entrepreneur. Purpose - This research aims to identify the determinant of social entrepreneurship intention among Malaysian youth. The result will help recommend the policy interventions to the policymakers and assist the future social entrepreneur. Design/methodology/approach - This research is using Theory of Planned Behavior by Ajzen and the framework is adapted and adopted by Hockerts. New antecedents are introduced which are Social Awareness, Prior Entrepreneurship Experience, Cosmopolitanism and Cultural Intelligence are added to be tested in Malaysian tertiary education context. Sampling technique used is Convenience sampling and the analysis was done using PLS-SEM. Findings/Expected Contributions - 277 students in tertiary education have taken place in the survey, and the result shows the contribution of the newly added antecedent in the research framework. Research limitations - Future research can test the new antecedent which is Empathy to test in Malaysian youth context as Empathy shows no significant relationship with the intention to be a social entrepreneur among Malaysian youth. Originality/value - This research adds new antecedents which are Social Awareness, Prior Entrepreneurship Experience, Cosmopolitanism, and Culture Intelligence to be which are yet to be used in the Malaysia context.
